Driving Toward Sustainability: ADNOC Distribution’s Latest Biofuel Initiative
In a significant move toward environmental sustainability, ADNOC Distribution, the UAE’s largest fuel and convenience retailer, has announced a groundbreaking initiative to power its heavy vehicle fleet with B20 biofuel. This innovative step aims to achieve a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions from the fleet, marking a pivotal moment in the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
ADNOC Distribution’s fleet plays a crucial role in supplying fuels and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to corporate customers across the UAE. By transitioning to B20 biofuel, derived from waste cooking oil, the company is taking proactive measures to reduce its carbon footprint while aligning with ADNOC Group’s overarching decarbonization strategy.
Eng. Bader Saeed Al Lamki, CEO of ADNOC Distribution, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “We are delivering on our commitment to using biofuel to power our fleet and help reduce our carbon intensity by 25% by 2030.” He added, “By incorporating B20 biofuel into our operations, ADNOC Distribution is taking a vital step toward securing a more sustainable future.”
The biofuel blending process takes place at a state-of-the-art production facility located in Madinat Zayed, Abu Dhabi. This facility ensures the efficient conversion of waste cooking oil into a renewable energy source, thereby reducing carbon emissions associated with transportation and contributing to sustainable mobility in the region.
This latest initiative is part of ADNOC Distribution’s broader sustainability agenda, which includes the conversion of a $1.5 billion term loan into a sustainability-linked one. This commitment reflects ADNOC Distribution’s dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions intensity, aligning environmental goals with financial incentives.
Furthermore, ADNOC Distribution is actively engaged in the development of innovative sustainable mobility solutions, such as electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. With 38 EV charging points already operational at service stations across the UAE, the company is poised to play a pivotal role in facilitating the transition to electric transportation.
Collaboration with strategic partners, such as Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), has led to the establishment of E2GO, a joint venture focused on building and operating EV infrastructure in Abu Dhabi and beyond. Additionally, ADNOC Distribution offers alternative fuel options like compressed natural gas (CNG) and eco-friendly lubricants, catering to the evolving needs of environmentally conscious consumers.
