Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) to Expand Rabigh Combined Cycle Power Plant

In an official announcement, the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) revealed its plans to implement the expansion project of the Rabigh combined cycle power plant by an additional 1.2GW combined cycle units. This decision follows the approval granted by the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), as stated in their announcement dated 24th October 2023 on the Saudi Press Agency website.

The expansion project aligns with SEC’s strategic objectives of enhancing its generation fleet capabilities to meet the growing demand for electricity in the Kingdom. By addressing the requirements of SPPC, known as “the Principal Buyer,” SEC aims to bolster its generation capabilities, fulfill the electrical system demand, and ensure the reliability of power supplies across the region.

SPPC, a limited liability company fully owned by the Government, serves as the off-taker of the produced power. As SEC progresses with the expansion project, it will collaborate closely with SPPC to navigate the process leading to the signing of Energy Conversion Agreements (ECAs) related to the project’s additional capacity.

Further updates and developments regarding this project will be communicated in due course as the project advances. It’s important to note that the financial impact of this development is not applicable at this stage, emphasizing the focus on the project’s strategic and operational aspects.

Stay tuned for more updates as SEC continues to drive advancements in the energy sector to meet the evolving needs of the Kingdom and ensure a sustainable and reliable power supply for all.
